How Many Players Can Play Big Walk? (2–12, Explained)
✔ Last checked: 2026-08-12
Big Walk supports 2 to 12 players. There is no single-player mode and no random matchmaking — this is a game you organize with friends, like a hiking trip.
The world adapts to your group size
When the host starts a session, they choose one of three world versions:
| World setting | Best for |
|---|---|
| 2 players | Duos who want the most focused version |
| 3 players | Trios |
| 4+ players | Any bigger group, up to 12 |
Some things in the world change based on this choice. One practical tip straight from the developers: pick the setting for the minimum number of people who’ll reliably show up. If your group of 6 has two flaky friends, a 4+ world keeps everyone unblocked.
Small group vs. big group
- 2–3 players: focused and intimate. Everyone matters in every puzzle, but you tackle challenges one at a time.
- 4–6 players: the sweet spot most people land on. Puzzles are tuned around four, and you have enough bodies to split up and clear several challenges around a tower at once — which genuinely shortens the game (how long to beat).
- 8–12 players: gloriously chaotic. More of a social party than a tight expedition.
House House says they didn’t design around one ideal number — both ends are intended experiences.
No matchmaking is a feature
Big Walk saves progress with a single host (see hosting & join codes in the FAQ) and is meant to be finished with the same crew over multiple evenings, like a book club for walking. That’s why there’s no way to queue with strangers.

FAQ
Can you play Big Walk solo?
Not really. There's no single-player mode — the entire game is designed around cooperative talking and teamwork. You could technically start a session alone and wander a little, but you won't get far.
Is there matchmaking with random players?
No. Big Walk is a long-form adventure meant to be played with the same group across multiple sessions, so House House deliberately left out random matchmaking.
What's the best number of players?
Any group size from 2 to 12 works by design, and House House says they didn't design around one ideal number. In practice the puzzles scale around four — that's the size most reviewers and players recommend, since four people can split up and clear challenges in parallel.
What happens if a friend misses a session?
Treat the world-size setting as the minimum headcount you expect, not the maximum. If some friends will drift in and out, pick a lower player-count world so the group can always progress.
